Charles Thomas, DDS
Being an orthodontist these past 21 years has been incredibly rewarding. I have found no greater feeling than seeing that finished, brilliant smile my patients wear after our treatments. I love being able to help others achieve incredible oral health and the connections I make with my patients are invaluable. We become friends.
I enjoy sharing others dreams, aspirations, and successes and doing what I can to support them. I am a dreamer myself, a hopeless optimist. I always want my patients to leave our office feeling better about who they are than before they walked in. My favorite times are when former patients get back in touch with me well after treatment to tell me how good life has been to them.
It took a lot of hard work and time to become an orthodontist, but I would do it all again in a heartbeat. I spent time at many prestigious institutions including:
- James Madison University - Bachelor of Science in Biology
- Medical College of Virginia - Doctorate of Dental Surgery
- Medical College of Virginia Pediatric Clinic
- Columbia University - Specialty Program in Orthodontics
Continuing Education and Professional Collaboration
I am also involved with numerous professional organizations and various study clubs. Communicating with other professionals has played a vital part in my ability to provide up-to-date oral care.
- American Dental Association
- Virginia Dental Association
- Richmond Dental Society
- American Association of Orthodontics
- Southern Association of Orthodontists
- Virginia Association of Orthodontists
Being active in the community allows me to give back. It does not always involve dentistry, but I always enjoy helping others. I am active in my church, a part of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization, and volunteer at various events through the Richmond Dental Society. I have been on several mission trips to Peru where I provided dental care to residents of a village near Chidayo. I am also a member of Smiles Change Lives, an organization that provides orthodontic care to children in need.
In the Office
I work to create a positive environment that is high energy and fun yet rewarding. I decided to be an orthodontist because it encompassed all the things I love. It is a perfect blend of art and science. Every patient is a blank canvas and it excites me to watch their development. Each patient brings unique passions and dreams to the office. I customize each treatment to fit their specific needs. I love the challenge and knowing that I can rise to meet it. Furthermore, I am also aware that my work can dramatically change a person's life. It is an awesome feeling to be able to help someone on this level.
Outside the Office
I am a native of Richmond and happily settled down here. I have two wonderful daughters, both grown and beginning their own adult lives. I love to be outside immersed in nature whenever I can. I like to spend my time running, skiing, fishing, and landscaping. I have climbed the Rocky Mountains and dived as deep as 130 feet under water. I enjoy feeling a connection to the environment and find it revitalizing. I also like to travel and am learning Spanish. I have a found a passion for the language and love to practice.
